Smart-looking custom-printed labels are cost-effective yet powerful. What’s more, they can have a surprisingly big impact on your business. And once you have a roll of them, you can brand anything you like, with your logo and company name highly visible.

You can use labels in myriad different ways, either on envelopes or, for example, on leaflets or other materials at trade shows and similar events, showcasing your brand. Equally, you may want to use labelling to impart important instructions or safety information, or an ingredients list. Or to include a personalised message such as ‘thank you for shopping with us’.

So, as long as they look professional, high-quality printed labels can be an invaluable addition to your business, and significantly increase exposure. You can also use them internally to organise stock, so that you know what you have and where.

Conversely, however, if things go wrong with your labelling, it can end up costing you a lot of time and money. So it’s important to get it right first time, and to have the right equipment for your needs. Otherwise, among other issues, you could end up with an illegible barcode, causing problems for the carrier and meaning that the order can’t be scanned or processed properly.

But if you want to save money by printing your labels yourself, you’re certainly not alone. Here, we look at two main ways of doing that – using a label printer or a label maker. But the terms are quite often used interchangeably. What’s more, they look pretty similar, and the differences between the two aren’t always widely understood. However, there are key distinctions, and each one has its own functions, advantages and uses.

The differences between a label maker and a label printer

Label makers

Label makers are typically the more affordable option, and ideal if you only need labels in lower volumes, so they’re often perfect, for example, for smaller businesses. You essentially just type in what you want the label to say, and the machine prints it out on the label. That way, you can create a variety of markers, from sticky notes to address labels and more.

You should be aware, though, that these devices can only produce single-line labels. These label machines are usually small, portable and handheld and used for on-site printing.

Label printers

Label printers are capable of printing complex texts with multiple lines and images. Equally, they can handle bigger volumes, so they’re often used in larger businesses and factories. Once hooked up to a computer or printer, they can generate the tags automatically.

Typically, the end result is of a higher quality than produced by a label maker, more durable, and can be used in shipping and production, for example as barcode labels. Certainly, the label printer is an indispensable tool for e-commerce logistics, and allows you to send parcels with flawless efficiency.
