We all have times where we need to sit down and do some revision. Whether that is for a test at school, learning to drive, advancing in our career or even for a hobby.
But sometimes we let ourselves down at the first hurdle by not making our revision notes interesting to read and therefore they are less likely to be easily remembered.
When doing revision some people find that it can help to write notes down as the physical act of writing helps the words helps them to stick in your mind. When doing this, try to use different coloured pens for each topic.
This way you can associate a colour with a certain thing you want to remember. It also means you can easily find a certain point at any given time.
Revision Notes Organiser
Talking of finding notes easily, once you’ve written all your notes down the last thing you want is to lose them all or have the dog eat them. Keep your revision notes organised and easy to find in a simple desk organiser.
You can use the index tabs to keep subjects separate and even carry it with you if you want to take it with you to school or work.
This is a classic revision strategy, and it’s a classic for a reason. It has been to referred to as a form of “metacognition” by scientists, as this method of grading your own work quickly deeps the memory.
In continuation of using colours to code your notes, you can colour code your flashcards too with a different coloured card for different subjects or themes.
If writing notes for revision isn’t your style, that’s fine too. Not everyone learns the same way. Some people prefer to read and re-read journals and books.
So for all those who prefer to read and not write keep a note of important sections in a book or piece of writing using sticky index flags, and never lose an important bit of information again.
Don’t forget to take a break
Sometimes we all get caught spending hours staring at a book or computer screen wishing for the information to go in. But after a prolonged amount of time revising you will actually stop retaining the information you’re trying to remember.
If you feel your mind wandering or stop concentrating, take a step back, make a brew and have a biscuit. You’ll feel much more relaxed and ready to be a revision pro in no time!
